The McPherson house has long stood at the entry to the hamlet of Bovina Center. Now known as Calico Farm, the house and farm are surrounded by desirable flat bottom-land. This agricultural complex housed generations of prosperous farmers who completed three additions to the original house and built one of the largest remaining barns around, a reflection of the gift of excellent land.
The project is an extensive restoration: only the timber frame and stacked bluestone foundation remain, everything else was carefully replaced. The house is true to it’s historic roots, while benefiting from an updated thermal envelope, mechanical systems, appliances which make an interior both timeless and modern, comfortable and enjoyable.
The kitchen features plaster walls and an oak floor.
The parlor fireplace anchors the down-valley view. A coffered ceiling conceals plumbing for the on-suite bathrooms, above.
While some changes went unnoticed, we moved windows so that as one walks around the house, views to the landscape are framed, on axis, with circulation.
The foyer and mud room. Initially, the front had three doors but none of them were near the stair.

Light colored plaster reflects light into the upper floor’s hallway.
The house has three staircases.
The upstairs is divided into two sections (farm foreman and family).
The old barn (right) was repaired and a sugar shack added.
