The Deer Lake House is a major renovation to an existing 1-season structure, owned by the estate of a famous pop artist of the 1970s. Nestled into the hillside on a gorgeous private lake, the project involved a large addition, a total overhaul of the existing exterior, as well as renovation of all major interior spaces. The most important element of this project was context. We aimed to honor the legacy of this beautiful site, while providing a contemporary rustic aesthetic and modern building technologies. The completed project has memory, and it tries to look to the future of the family as it grows over the changing seasons.
The renovated kitchen, living, and dining room used natural materials like bluestone, maple, and limestone.
This is a view of the building and lake from a bird’s eye.
I think we all want to write a book at this desk.
The evening is a special time when the building turns itself inside out.

Shou-sugi ban siding and metal clad windows create a sleek look with natural undertones.
Porches for lake-viewing was integral to the design.
